What is liquid-cooled EV supercharging
2025-02-17

Liquid-cooled EV supercharging technology is a new energy technology that applies a liquid cooling system to the charging process of electric vehicles. Its main principle is to cool the heat generated during the charging process through a liquid cooling system, thereby improving charging efficiency and speed.

Liquid-cooled EV supercharging piles are equipped with a special liquid circulation channel between the cable and the charging gun. Coolant that plays a heat dissipation role is added to the channel. The heat on the charging cable is efficiently taken away through the liquid cooling system, so that a larger charging current can be loaded on a thinner charging line, which increases the charging power exponentially and achieves the purpose of high-speed charging.

1. Working principle

The liquid-cooled EV charging module is no different from the traditional air-cooled EV charging module in electrical principle. The key is the heat dissipation method. Air cooling, as the name suggests, is done with a fan; but liquid cooling is different. It is necessary to consider the close contact between the coolant and the heating device, and the conductivity of the coolant, and it cannot have any contact with electrical components; at the same time, the design from liquid-cooled modules to fully liquid-cooled charging piles requires extremely high thermal design capabilities of the system R&D team.

2. Liquid-cooled EV supercharging solution

From a technical perspective, liquid-cooled EV supercharging includes two solutions: "semi-liquid cooling" and "full liquid cooling". The former is just to configure a liquid-cooled terminal that supports high-power charging at the charging terminal. Because the technology is relatively mature and the investment cost is lower, it is also the mainstream technical solution for liquid-cooled EV supercharging.
