History of Tesla interface development
2024-09-29

NACS was developed internally by Tesla as a proprietary charging solution for AC and DC charging. On November 11, 2022, Tesla opened its own Charging interface design on the official website, and renamed the Tesla charging interface NACS (North American Charging Standard), hoping to make it the new standard for charging in North America. It follows DIN 70121 and ISO 15118 specifications, and in April 2023 SAE International published its Technical Information Report (TIR) on the SAE J3400 standard, which focuses on a coupler (charging interface) system used by most electric vehicles on North American roads today. This report shows that the organization is closer to the North American Charging Connector Standard (NACS) developed by Tesla in terms of standardization development. In the process of the SAE J3400 standard (" North American Charging Standard "or" NACS ") replacing the SAE J1772 standard, North America is still dominated by AC, although a lot of attention has been paid to DC fast charging technology.

Tesla has adopted a diversified strategy in charging interface standards to adapt to charging facilities and market needs in different regions. In the North American market, the vehicles sold by Tesla and the Charging stations built have adopted the NACS (North American Charging Standard) standard interface, which is the interface design launched by Tesla to promote the standardization of charging in North America and aims to become the new standard in North America. Tesla is actively working to upgrade the NACS standard to a national standard in North America to increase its market presence in the region.

However, in other major markets around the world, Tesla has adopted different charging interface standards. In China, Tesla follows the national standard interface of GB/T 20234-2015 version, which not only solves the charging compatibility problem of Tesla models in the Chinese market, but also reflects the importance and catering of Tesla to the Chinese market. By adapting to the "new national standard", Tesla owners will enjoy more convenient charging services in China.

In the European market, Tesla chose the CCS2 standard interface, which has been widely used in Europe. By adopting the CCS2 interface, Tesla has ensured the ease of charging its models in Europe and has achieved good compatibility with the local charging infrastructure.

Tesla's diversified strategy on charging interface standards not only reflects its deep understanding and flexible response to the global market, but also demonstrates its positive role in promoting the standardization process of the electric vehicle industry. By continuously optimizing and upgrading the charging interface standard, Tesla is committed to providing global consumers with a more convenient and efficient charging experience, and promoting the sustainable development and popularization of the electric vehicle industry.
