There are three types of DCFC connectors in the United States In addition to the Combined Charging System (CCS1) and CHAdeMO, the NACS connector is one of several connector types that enable fast charging of electric vehicles (EVs). NACS can also be used for AC level 2 charging and is compatible with the J1772 connector via an adapter.

Compared with the current CSS interface in North America, the Tesla NACS supercharge gun uses an integrated ultra-thin package design, AC and DC integration, and the maximum DC charging power can reach 1000kW, while the size is only half that of the CCS charging gun. Several advantages of NACS overcharge interface are recognized:

(1) Fast charging speed. According to official data, the Tesla supercharge interface can complete 80% of the battery charge in 30 minutes, which can provide owners with rapid energy needs.

(2) Humanized design. There is a large screen on the overcharge interface, which can display the charging progress and power, and support touch operation, which is convenient for users to select the charging mode, query the charging record, etc.

(3) High security. The interface adopts multiple safety protection mechanisms, which can not only automatically detect the battery condition and charging environment during charging, avoid overheating or overcharging of the battery, but also equipped with lightning protection and fire protection system to ensure the safety and stability of the charging process.

The NACS charging gun standard also supports basic communication protocols for the necessary communication and control between the electric vehicle and the charging pile. These communication functions include the transmission of charging status, charging power, charging time and other information.

NACS is an AC/DC integrated socket, while CCS1 and CCS2 AC/DC are separate, naturally the overall size is larger than NACS. The standard supports single-phase AC charging with a maximum power of 80 amps and is commonly used in home charging stations, public charging stations and commercial charging facilities. One limitation of NACS is that it is not compatible with markets with AC three-phase power, such as Europe and China. Therefore, in the European and domestic markets with three-phase electricity, NACS is difficult to apply.
